Scroll Saw Art

by Patrick Spielman and Kerry Shirts

In some ways, I feel I owe Kerry Shirts more than the praises I have for his book. As an avid reader, I have read only a handful of books that have made such an impact on me. He has single handedly influenced my direction in scrollsaw art and my designs.

"Scroll Saw Art" shows us segmentation is a style all its own and NOT simply a bastardized version of intarsia. Kerry Shirts brings his subjects to life and provides several designs to stimulate and satisfy the scroller.

Although most of his designs contained in the book focus on wildlife, there are also a couple portraits, landscapes, boat and plane.

His designs increase in difficulty, and give step by step instructions that can follow to make the projects as shown in the book. To the right is my interpretation of the Zebra on the cover of "Scroll Saw Art".

If you enjoy wildlife, and are looking for more ... if you are looking to cross the line making your scrolling a piece of art ... buy the book, try segmentation for the art form it is.
