"Clipboard Cutouts"

by Toni Burghout

If you're ever looking for a quick and easy gift item, fundraiser or item for a craft show, these "Clipboard Cuts" might be just the thing. Simple and economical, these functional items are sure to please.

Last year, I used this idea as a fundraiser with a great return on clipboards that were a dollar.

It's relatively easy to dress up a clipboard with a little fretwork in the corners or at the bottom of the board. When size and position of the fretwork is considered, it will not impair the structure or function of the clipboard.

So go ahead, grab your favorite stencil or fretwork pattern and give it a try.

When cutting the boards, remember they have metal fasteners at the top on the backside.

You may want to cover these with tape, or use an auxiliary table if you are worried about scratching your scroll saw table surface.

When choosing your design, remember that even though the hardboard surface cuts well, the stability is going to be compromised with the more you cut out of the board.

Keep your design from interfering with the clip.

Small cuts in the corner, top or bottom of the clipboard should not impair the usage of the board if the cuts are placed far enough over to the margin of the board.

Using quality painter's tape, cover over the surface of the cutting board where you want to cut your pattern.

Using the adhesive of your choice, secure your pattern or draw your stencil over top of the painter's tape.

Drill all pilot holes necessary to make the inside cuts.

Using a #2R blade, make all the necessary cuts.

Remove the pattern and tape, clean residual dust from surface.

Hint: Legal size clipboards will give you more room to play with your pattern at the bottom of the board.
