"Sparrow Watch" - Fretwork Styles

by Toni Burghout

"Sparrow Watch" is one example of the unique work we do here at Chrestensen Burghout Designs. The pattern design process doesn't stop with one version, or one cut. Just as each of us has a different preference in the food we eat, the clothes we wear and vehicle we drive, we also have different preferences in our style of scroll saw art.  For that reason, Sue and I try to come up with as many different views on one project as possible so that you, as a scroller, can choose and have alternatives for your customers.

When designing patterns, I begin with the fretwork version which often takes shape in a variety of different ways. One idea may produce several different fretwork patterns depending on which technique I pursue - open cut, or fine line,  or a combination of the two.

The open cut style, ("Sparrow Watch" Fretwork, above left), clearly shows the design with large cut out sections. This technique may incorporate some detail lines or veining, but the majority of the pattern is determined by what is there versus what is cut out.  This style of fretwork pattern has the advantage of large open spaces contrasting on a mounted background, and are easily eye catching at a distance.

The fine line style, ("Sparrow Watch" Fretwork, above right), produces a more obscure picture and maintains more of the wood with fine very precise cuts.  By viewing this style of fretwork pattern at a slight angle, you will have the additional depth of the inside cut edges to accentuate the design.

The open cut style fretwork patterns are more forgiving and work well for both beginner and advanced scrollers, however, if you would like a challenge, take a scroll across a fine line pattern and experience how intricate cuts make wood turn into art.
